Gio Ponti 1950's Executive Desk for Banca Nazionale Del Lavoro - Labeled & Produced in the workshop of Schirolli

Rare Executive Desk designed by Gio Ponti in 1950's for the main offices of the Banca Nazionale Del Lavoro in Rome and executed by one of many workroom’s Gio Ponti collaborated with of Schirolli, Mantova.

This beautiful walnut desk features nine drawers with aged brass handles, from which five have have locks and the still original set of two keys each preserved. Distinctive features by Gio Ponti are the side shaped angled profile and legs as well as the incredible craftmaship. The desk is provenance of a Roman art collector and is in perfect vintage condition, labeled at the bottom.

Throughout his career, Ponti mastered numerous roles, including architect, industrial designer, craftsman, professor, painter, editor, and journalist. Born in Milan in 1891, Giovanni (Gio) Ponti studied architecture at Politecnico and after serving in World War I, he became Art Director for the high end Florentine ceramics company Richard-Ginori. In 1928, Ponti launched both his own architectural studio and the famed magazine Domus.
In the 1950s, he gained international fame with the design of the Pirelli Tower in Milan and he was asked to be a part of the urban renewal of Baghdad, collaborating with top architects from around the world. His 1957 book, Amate l’architettura, is considered to be a microcosm of his work —an incredible legacy spanning art, architecture, industrial design, publishing and academia.
