Pair of 1960s Vintage Caramel Barcelona Chairs Manufactured by Robert John, Signed

$10,500.00

Stunning pair of vintage caramel tan Barcelona chairs designed by Mies Van Der Rome in 1929 and manufactured by Robert John, circa mid 20th Century. One of the most recognized objects of the last Century, and an icon of the Modern movement, the Barcelona chair.

The Barcelona chair has a button tufted back and seat, leather panel support, and a polished stainless steel frame. These chairs have recently been meticulously restored, including replacement of the cushion foam, with best efforts made to maintain the original patina. An original tag is attached at one of the chairs and the cushions are in restored vintage condition but otherwise perfect and the frames are absolutely spotless as one would expect from stainless steel as opposed to chrome. The chairs appear to meticulously mirror he same specifications as then contemporary Knoll production chairs.

Although the label states Robert John Co. New York, we know the company was based out of Philadelphia so the NY label most likely refers to their showroom. Otherwise, we do not know much about Robert John Co. but we know they were based out of Philadelphia which, coincidentally, is not far from Knoll's East Greenville, Pennsylvania headquarters in which they moved into in the 1950's. We have seen other items for sale advertised as "Robert John for Knoll" which leads us to believe they most likely had a close working relationship, if not partnership, where in the early days, Robert John manufactured for the Knoll label.

Our pair is for sure a gorgeous set with unusual provenance acquired from the first owner, a gentleman in NYC.

  • Leather and polished stainless steel
